Arthroplasty

Prosthetic surgery or arthroplasty consists of the substitution of a damaged and painful joint by an artificial joint. The most frequent cause of pain and deformity is arthritis (degeneration of the cartilage to a greater or lesser degree) but it can also appear in inflammatory diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, in other processes like avascular necrosis (lack of blood circulation o the bone), congenital problems like dysplasia or consequences of Perthes disease, or also after traumatic injuries, either because these are serious or because of post-traumatic degeneration.
